  • Byron B: Fort McPherson, GA. RAF Bentwaters/RAF Woodbridge, 1971-73, Information Office on the "Phantom Forum" .Wow!! What a neat place. Really brings back the memories. Did a lot of the base tours for visiting groups, and filed tons of Home Town News Releases for folks stationed on both bases. Used to work for (then) MSgt Tom Lokken, and SSG John Small. John eventually married another co-worker, Sgt Kathy Howard. Was there when the first female airmen were stationed at RAF Bentwaters (a lady by the name of Sharon Butler who worked in the hostpital). First Sergeant of the squadron was Herman Schnell, who had been a First Sergeant since WW II. Wing Commander when I left was Col Duane Weatherwax. Still in harness (can't seem to get the uniform off), doing print and broadcast journalism for the Army here as a Master Sergeant (hoping for Sergeant Major). Really enjoy the web sites. Hope to be a regular visitor. Would like to hear from old friends who were there with me. Feel free to drop a note! 8/12/99

  • Art Bailey: RAF Alconbury, 1975-77, 10th CES/ Fire Protection Branch..at both the structural station and at the flight line crash station. I am also interested in anyone who served there during those years who also served in the Weather Det in the smaller tower, right by the crash station and sharing the space there with the fire alarm room. One of the Fire Chief's there was MSgt Johnnie B Flowers, a great man! Also looking for Sgt Ralph Ledford, Sgt Ray Kawa and the civilian cook who fed us so well in the crash station mess hall. Does any body remember the Corby Commandoes? The birdman who use to fly a hawk around the flight line, he drove a mini station wagon with speakers on it's roof to scare off the birds. I could go on & on here. Lot's of great memories. I hope to find someone who was there during those years too! Does anybody know where I can get an RF-4C model with all the markings of our old base, 10th TRW? I love history too and I will enjoy comparing notes and hearing from any of my fellow brothers and sisters who also was there no matter what year(s). After all, I followed in your footsteps and I respect that! I'm looking forward very much to writing to whoever wants to talk with me. I have just joined this web site. I have enjoyed the pictures, what a change, and not a good one in the most recent pics. 6/23/02

I truly cherish the time and experiences that I had while in England and at RAF Woodbridge. I lived in Ipswich for about a year, when they won the Soccer Championship (FA Cup I think it was called). I still have the scarf. Then I moved to an old mansion house outside of Woodbridge. All of the people there were so friendly and nice and I think of it all often with joy and a smile. Thank you so much for providing me a way to relive these fond times once again. 6/10/99

I am contacting you in the hope you may be able to inform me if there is a similar site for RAF Lakenheath. I have many friends from there who served with 492nd, 493rd, 494th, & 495th Sqns, both on F-4D's and f-111's. I was a Cop from Sheffield who made regular visits to the base and a founder member of the "48 Club" Robert E Messerli was base Commander, Col Jim Salminen 494 Cdr, Ed Heit 494 Ops. 7/2/00
  • Kevin Barnes: Fareham, Hants, UK. RAF North Front, Gibraltar, 1982. I am trying to locate an old friend of mine named Michelle (sadly I can no longer recall her surname) who was an Air Traffic Control (assistant?) in the RAF. I met her in 1982 in Gibraltar and we had some terrific and not so good (down to me) times there when I was in the Navy, based at RAF North Front for some months. She was in her early twenties in '82, fair haired and just over 5 feet tall. Very articulate and bright, hailing from the Norfolk area, possibly King's Lynn. Anyone have any ideas where she might be? I'd be immensely appreciative. Homepage 1/15/02

  • Paul & Lucy Barnett: Eugene, OR & Ipswich. RAF Bentwaters, 81st Security Police, 1966-70. Lost this site for a year. Sent to Wheelus TDY in June 67 for 6 day war and in May to France to close bases. I can't believe that I don't know anyone on your pages after spending four whole years there. Still, it makes facinating reading. Great site and I promise not to loose it again. 6/19/99
  • Robert A Barr: RAF Bentwaters, 1977-79, Base Data Processing Center operating an old (ancient, by today's standards) Burroughs B3500 computer, while Col Rudy Wacker was the base commander. For about the last 10 months of my stay there, I lived in a little farmhouse with an address that people still don't believe: Valley Farm Cottage, Near Bildeston, Near Hadleigh, Near Ipswich, and believe it or not, a letter sent to this address actually made it in about a day. Anyhow, I found these websites via a search engine, and I'm pretty surprised to find so many people still interested in the history of the twin bases. A friend of mine I met while I was there sent me a newspaper special edition covering the closing of the bases, and somehow I managed to lose the copy he gave me. This was about six pages of newsprint, covering mainly the last 20 years of the bases' operation. Would you have any idea where I might find another copy of this, or a photocopy of a copy? Sorry to bug you, and I'm wondering if you're even familiar with this piece of newsprint. 4/17/02
  • Bob Barrett: RAF Wethersfield, Oct 10, 1960-Oct 10, 1963, 20th TFW, . Am really impressed with quality of your web page. TDY to RAF Woodbridge several times during this period and am somewhat familiar with RAF Bentwaters. Please check my pages at RAF Wethersfield. 7/16/99
  • John Barrett: Minneapolis, MN. Martlesham Heath, 1974-76. Your pictures of the deserted site are sad testimony to the good times I had there. It was a communications site (microwave, tropo scatter and AUTOVON) for NARS to Greenland and beyond and gateway to the continent. Local lore (because we were secret...) had it that we were a RADAR site, some kind of secret atomic site and lastly... an underground submarine base. Nelson, I can only say that I'm glad someone else was doing the toilets! The buildings in your pictures were as Nelson spelled them out. We were, for all intents and purposes, self-sufficient. It was technically remote duty under AF terminology. I can still remeber trout for breakfast in the 5-table dining hall. Anyway. Great Site! 4/14/00

Remember all the talk surrounding the UFO crash and witchcraft? 1/23/01 Some of my greatest memories and moments of my life are from that base. SSgt Robert A Ward was the flight chief. I teamed up with the great Ken Hagge as the two best desk sergeants the Air Force has ever seen!! We were a great team. (Sorry, Tony Congi). My other great friend was patrolman David "Goose" Bishop. Never forget the "Blue Max"!!! Please you guys, never forget the party over Haley's house and seeing (unforgetably)David "Stick" Stickler in his underwear with those pimples on his butt. Let's don't forget "Fabian" either. Ken married Jackie at RAF Bentwaters (on her lunch hour). God bless them both. Hey Ken, let's do some huut doogs, some nachees and a cuuke. Maybe Jackie can set me up with her friend, Fawn! I will never forget the comradarie we had with each other. I am always thinking of the 81SPS. I hope to hear and see some of you in the near future. • John R Bolam: Scunthorpe, England. Being of far too young and of the wrong nationality I never had the honor of serving at RAF Woodbridge. I used to visit on occasions, and would sit on the little pier there and watch the countless A10s fly. You would hear the hi-pitch wine of their engines, and then they would arise from behind the trees, always in twos. A little while latter, I was able to go to this dirt track that was a the end of the runway and watch the planes at first hand from behind a fence. The USAF MPs came around and asked us what we were doing, but when we told them that we were only here to see the planes they left-us-alone. (Quite the opposite you got if you tried to stop on the side road next to RAF Scampton when the place swarmed with Vulcans and their a-bombs). Then they came; sixteen A10s in groups of four, flying no higher than 100ft overhead. We stood at the end of the runway and as they flew over us we used to wave to them. One-or-two of them even shook their wings to us. On another occasion a Jolly-Green-Giant helicopter flew over us, and the side door was open, and the airman in there waved to us as we waved to them. Perhaps, all this is garbage to you all. But to anyone who had the privilege of serving at RAF Woodbridge/Bentwaters let me say that I alone truly think that each and every one of you, whether you were flight-crew of ground-crew are all part of what was. You were part of the group that protected us. Without your presence I and all of this might not exist. And even, if in this backward world no-body seems to think that, let me at least personally acknowledge your work. May all of you achieve in life eternal peace. Thank You, my friends. 1/17/00

  • Stephen Broshar:: Kansas. RAF Woodbridge, Jul 1976-Aug 1978, 81st SPS "D Flight". Reading these stories brings back a lot of memories, many of them melancholy. I remember I used to hate when the alert klaxon went off. We never knew how many hours we would be standing watch before we were relieved. If only I had been one of the guard dogs that only worked 8 hours no matter what. I ran into a guy from my hometown that was at RAF Woodbridge about 6 years after I left. He told me they had closed it. When I was there, the tab "B" shelters were being built. They were going to replace the F-4's with A-10's. I remember one night being on a SAT team and driving around when we got a radio call from the K-9 unit to meet him at one of the aircraft parking pads in the tapa. We arrived and asked where he was? He said "look up"! We looked up. It was cold out, so he opened the canopy on an F-4 and stuck his dog in the WSO seat and he clinbed in the pilot seat. After he closed the canopy he couldn't figure out how to open them from the inside. We about peed our utilitys we were laughing so hard. Just one of many stories that are coming back to me. 02/08/04

  • Richard Burak: Vernon, NY (Utica). RAF Bentwaters, August 1963-April 1966. It was a great time. I kick myself for not spending more time "on the road" enjoying more of the sights. I did meet the girl who became my wife while there, although she was from Leeds, Yorkshire. A vivid memory was the time when I was on temporary duty from the intelligence unit to the post office for Christmas and this rather large tree fell over and cut the quonset in half. Luckily, one of the troops passing by saw the tree swaying down to the roots and warned us before it came down. The sorting rack was right there with three people sorting the days mail. 5/16/00

  • Troy Burns: RAF Alconbury, May 1958-59. Turrett Gunner. We called it the BX, for base exchange, and what I mainly recall is that it had a snack bar (unless I'm completely off base) where my friends and I ate most of our meals. Because we always missed at least one meal when we flew, we convinced them to give all the single gunners separate rations. That mess hall was soooo bad, at RAF lconbury, that we seldom ever ate there after getting our ration money. We did have to eat at the mess hall when our crew was on alert. The entire crew would have to ride a bus to the mess hall and eat our meals there, then ride back to the lert area. On the other hand, the mess hall at RAF Hurlburt where we trained before going to RAF Alconbury was excellent. Bob Green adds: "Were any of you there when (I think it happened only one day) when they gave a real surprise at the mess hall; steak and beer! Yes, as a reward for the good job on the particular alert, if memory serves well. All member 'Scotty' the gal that worked in the mess hall? Troy is the first to recall 'Bloke' who was the Brit Civilian shuttle bus driver...in his chauffer cap. How about 'Kraut' the German who supposedly was a Nazi during the WW II?" 1/1/01
