  • Jamie F Cabral: Peoria, Arizona. RAF Bentwaters, 1987-89, 510th FS The Buzzards. Great site! The creek was my first duty station. I had the time of my life being stationed there. I was too young at the age of 19 to appreciate where I was. Jet Engine Mechanic / crew dawg. I loved the A-10. I miss all of my old friends and all of the good times we had. I'm still looking for some old friends. Since I left, the USAF has crossed me over into the F-16 world which makes it even tougher to find 'Hog Keepers'. I'm currently stationed at Luke AFB, AZ. I'm an F-16 Crew Chief Instructor. Even though I have switched platforms I will always be proud to have worked the 'Hog' at a great place and with great people. I wish I could go back and be stationed there, but I know that will never happen again for any of us. Take care, keep in touch if you remember me, or the 'Boozehound Crew'. Or keep in touch just to chat about a lovely place that is seldom ever heard of these days! How ironic that later on 1995-99 I was stationed with the 78ts FS The Bushmasters at Shaw AFB. 2/23/01

I was stationed there after I had completed a tour of duty at Bien Hoa Vietnam, hence only a 22 month tour. I was a Combat Security Policeman (Heavy Weapons- Mortar Gunner) and they sent me to England to be a Law Enforcement Flight Chief. I still can't figure that one out. My pub was "The Fox" in Finchinfield owned by Joe King. I used to sing (back-up) and play guitar with Bill McCann and Terry Gabrion at the FOX. We sang for our drinks and we must have been pretty good because we were "loaded" most of the time. When you're young you can tolerate that type of behavior. If anyone has any info for me I'll thank you kindly in advance. If I owe you money "I'm Broke", if I stole your girlfriend "She pulled a knife on me!" Eventally married a great girl from Holton ,Cindy Earl. • Gill nee Compton and Jim Cleverly from Kent, England submitted the following: My wife has recently got interested in the Internet and is trying to trace an old work colleague from the early 1960s from Rushden, Northants called Ann Boytim (nee Payne). She married a US airman named Wayne Boytim around 1963/4 whilst he was serving at RAF Chelveston, Northants. They later moved to RAF Bentwaters and from there she has lost touch. We believe there was a son born in the mid-60s called Steven/Stephen. We have seen that Ann is listed on 60's Bentwaters site but that is as far as we have been able to trace. There is a Wayne Boytim listed in your White Pages in Tampa, Florida but we believe that is unlikely to be the correct one as we think they may have gone to live in Arizona on returning to the US after his UK service. Any assistance you are able to give us in this search would be most appreciated. 12/2/00
  • Cecil Clanton: Florida. RAF Bentwaters, 1952. I made contact with A2C Alan Wredberd. I had posted, looking for him somewhere in England, 1957-58. Transfered to Aviano Italy 1958 where I met him. He is alive and well. We were in Vehicle maintenance (motor pool) in Italy 3/6/02
  • Clayton Clark: Houston Texas. RAF Bentwaters, 1968-71, 81st TAC Hospital. I was the only Medical/Dental Maintenance Technician for RAF Bentwaters/RAF Woodbridge while there. Great career field in the AF. Made SSgt in just over three years. Too much fun to remember much. Several of us had new MG's and TR6's and spent much of our time racing along the one lane roads of East Anglia. Everytime I watched an episode of MASH I was reminded of my time at RAF Bentwaters. The hospital commander who imbibed too much, the Dental Surgeon and the Chief Nurse, the (sadly) Flight Surgeon who crashed on a training mission in Germany, and those foggy nights when I pulled ambulance duty. Oh,the girls, and the buses that brought them to the clubs. I lived off base in Ipswich. 03/3/10
  • Pam Clark: New Jersey. RAF Bentwaters, 1971-79, 81st. I am looking for memories of my folks to put together in a scrap book for their anniversary. • Jim Clark: Lynn Lake, Manitoba. RAF Bentwaters, 81st Camron (Field Maintenance Sq) Electrical Shop, Feb 1963-Dec 1965. Just looked over the web page and noticed many familiar events and days especially the November crash on the runway.Memories I remember Ron Burrel and have corresponded with him in hopes of tracking down friends. I also noticed Dooley Gray's name as a fireman....Dooley was a member of the Suffolk County Titans football team. There were others like Knobby Walsh (Knobby came out of retirement to kick field goals for us). Dave Korcep was the coach of the team at that time and Paul Green was the QB. Al Berning played as well. I am sorry to see that Chappie James passed away....he was a real class guy. Well, I guess I had better close for now but before I do I just want to thank you and Linn for keeping the memories alive...Good luck and God bless. 2/26/99

  • Dr David W Clarke: University of Sheffield, UK. Having located you excellent RAF Bentwaters website, I'm wondering if it would be possible to post an appeal for information on your message board/s. I'm involved in research into an incident that occurred in August 1956 when the GCA unit at RAF Bentwaters tracked 'unidentified flying objects' on their radar screens. This incident triggered a major alert, with further trackings reported later in the evening by both the RATCC and GCA radars at RAF Lakenheath. My research has led me into contact with the RAF side of this story, in that I have been able to trace both the retired Controller who tracked the UFO from the GCI station at Neatishead in Norfolk, and crews from RAF Venoms who sent to intercept the targets. I have a list of names of personnel at Bentwaters in 1956 who were involved in the incident, and would like to trace these and/or others who may remember the events. The names of the personnel at RAF Bentwaters and other bases involved in the 1956 incident were: SSgt Lawrence S Wright, Control Tower Shift Chief, 1264th AACS Sq, RAF Bentwaters, TSgt Elmer L Whenry, GCA Operator, 1264th Sq, RAF Bentwaters, John L Vaccare, Jr, GCA Operator, 1264th Sq, RAF Bentwaters, 1Lt Charles V Metz, 512th Fighter Interception Sq, RAF Bentwaters, 1Lt Andrew C Rowe, 512th Fighter Interception Sq, RAF Bentwaters, Major Orville E Bixel, USAF Wing Intelligence Officer, 81st Fighter Bomber Wing, Captain Edward L Holt, USAF Air Targets Officer, Forrest D Perkins, Watch Supervisor, Lakenheath RATCC, SSgt Thomas Emerick, Lakenheath RATCC, A/3C James M Kastner, Lakenheath RATCC, A/1C Ronald R Erickson, Lakenheath RATCC. I'd appreciate any assistance you could offer and look forward to hearing from you. Many thanks for your assistance. Hopefully someone may remember something! 5/27/01

  • David Comerford: Jacksonville, NC. RAF Bentwaters, July 1979-July 1982. I loved being stationed at RAF Bentwaters. In fact it was my favorite assignment in my 20 year career. I worked in the Dining Hall and met some wonderful people, both military and civilian. Folks I will always remember with fondness. I worked the night of Dec 27, 1980 when the UFOs were seen and knew all the peaple involved. LT Col Halt always gave me a ride between bases if he saw me at the bus stop. He spent a lot of time at the chow hall also, he was a very nice guy. The chaplains were a special lot too. Jim King and the rest made life for this single airman far from home so much nicer. Oh the memories, I will never forget those 3 years. 12/05/00
  • Michael B Combs: Gualala, CA. RAF Bentwaters, Jan 1970-Feb 1975, 81st Combat Support Group. Arrived as a 2nd Lt (6 yrs enl-left 5 years later as a "permanent" Captain). Wing Budget Officer with late wife Marilynn and 3 sons. The 67th ARRS had arrived a few months before, housing was tight. Worked with UK Civ Arthur Sharman, Walberswick, and TSgt Phil Ashcraft. Burned a lot of overtime to put out the budget. Phil's replacement was the late TSgt (SMSgt)Robert K Clough, who also did a great job as manager of the Rod & Gun Club. Boss was Comptroller Lt Col Lenore Henson, soon promoted to Colonel, promotion party at my house, The Street Farm, Saxmundham. Later worked for Lt Col James Frise, great boss, and five good wing commanders. Col Charles Word pinned on star there, best commander I ever had. I was the Budget Officer for five years, best job I ever had, on by far the best base I ever served on. I had season tickets for Ipswich Town during their glory years. Played on the base soccer team. Had fish and chips each Friday lunch with Art Sharman and friends at the O Club, and great hamburgers at the Top Three Club take out. Memorable people, Iris Fletcher, UK civilian employee Civil Engineers, Herr Wilfred Robst, Nonappropriated Funds, and many others whose names will come back to me as soon as I post this. To say that this was a special place at a special time does not do justice to how much I loved my job, the bases, fellow Yanks, the towns and townspeople, British TV. I am so happy with the memories, and so sad I can't do it all over again. 03/25/06
  • Lawrence P Concannon, (MSgt Retired): Leiston, Suffolk, UK. RAF Bentwaters, Jun 1977-Jan 1964. 81st Supply Sq. RAF Bentwaters/RAF Woodbridge, Aug 1988-Aug 1992, 81st Security Police Squadron, Flight Sergeant on RAF Woodbridge and Security Police/ABGD Instructor then back to Korea. Met some of the best people in my career and still stay in touch with some. CATM folks were great. Tom Long LE Instructor was great. Nick names were Tom and Jerry. • Paul Constable: Suffolk, UK. I am a brit living here in Suffolk, UK and recently went back to RAF Bentwaters with my work. I say went back because my father was stationed at RAF Wattisham as he was in the RAF and also living there was an American kid whos Dad was a pilot on a USAF/RAF exchange program. This kid and I became very good friends and back in 1979-80 his mum used to take us onto RAF Bentwaters, when she went to the BX, and left us to make use of the bowling alley etc. great times. The firm I was working at RAF Bentwaters had an American who left the USAF when the base closed and married and stayed in England. He worked at RAF Bentwaters as a serviceman and now as a civilian 14 years later building refridgerators! Sad to see the base so different from how I remember it. But while I was there one thing did amuse me. I was taking my lunch break sitting on the stands at the old baseball pitch and there would you believe it were old American candy wrappers, still under the stand. They must have been there at least 14 years since the USAF left in 1993. Those candy wrappers seem to be the only connection that little America was once here. Great website keep up the good work. 05/04/07
  • George Conway Long Beach, CA. RAF Bentwaters, Nov 1970-Oct 1981, B Flight LE. Has it been 30 years? Wow. Never had so much fun. Or camping at the Albion fairs, again with loaned gear from the base? Where are me mates today? I remember the SPs always partied harder. 05/23/08

  • Julie Cook : I'm very new to all this, I live in Ipswich, Suffolk, UK. Have just read a newspaper article concerning Linn Barringers pages. I am after any information about William Arnold Jacques RAF Bentwaters, 1264th AACS Squadron, under Major D T Francis, 1958-59. Shipped back home towards the end of summer 1959. He originally came from California, I'm told. He was at least 6ft tall and handsome. I would appreciate any help or guidance you can give me. If you can help. Thanks for your time, this has been a real experience! 5/21/99
  • Kenneth Cook: Eyke, Woodbridge, Suffolk, UK. RAF Bentwaters, May 1965-Jul 1968 & Jul 1972-Sep 1977, 81st Air Police/81st Security Police. Stumbled on the site. It is great. Sad to see our old base neglected as I live so close. 7/19/01 Anyone at RAF Bentwaters or RAF Woodbridge, 1954-55, knowing Patricia Moore who lived on Queens Ave Woodbridge, and worked at the canning factory on the thorofare, I would appreciate their getting in touch. A dear friend of our's, whose mother has just passed away, is desperately trying to locate Patricia. Also, did anyone know a USAF member around that time with the last name of Soar? Any info will be passed along to our friend. 5/25/02 Have heard from a lot of old friends via the 81st SPS site.I have some interesting pics on the SPS site of the former base if you want to check them out. • Jerry Cornwall: I was a cab driver for the J J Cars company, and following companies right up to the base's decommissioning in 1993. In 1994 I had to go into the Ipswich hospital for back surgery, while there I met and became friendly with an SP dormed on RAF Woodbridge called Walt Im. Sorry but that's the only name he gave me that I can remember? I recall he had seriously injured his ankle in a fall from his Harley on the back roads between Tunstall and Wanttisden. It would be nice to hear from him again. Maybe he remembers the jokes and laugh's that we had with the staff on our ward. Also the other serviceman who had a bad car smash at Bromswell. Remember the Brut aftershave joke that went slightly wrong? If you are out there get in touch through these pages. I will keep looking in on the missing persons page 2-3 times a month. I will look for Walt to Jerry, OK, and to all those that worked at RAF Bentwaters between 1985-1993. 12/30/00 I wonder if you could help me please I'm looking for a SP officer named Walter (???), (Walt for short) who was hospitalised in heath rd hospital, after a motorcycle accident on the back roads of RAF Bentwaters between the village's of Wanttisdon & Tunstall. We shared a lot of laugh's together for example (nurses who do the split's to ground level even in uniform! and the birthing of elephant's & hippo's). If Walt see's this he will know, and remember who I am. The last time we met was when I visited him at his barracks's at RAF Woodbridge. I worked for the on base cab firm of JJ cars. If I remember rightly he was riding a Harley Davidson at the time of his accident. Thank you for any help you can give. It would be nice to chat with him again, just to see how he is doing. 3/30/01

Was going thru some of your e-mail and didn't see anyone I knew. I keep in touch with a few people from that era, John Astry, Chris Bouwhis, & Chuck Wrobel. Would like to hear from anyone from the 91st, 92nd or 78th from that period. I retired from the Air Force on 28 Feb 1966, as a MSGT. We had 6 children who needed a father at home, and as an airman in a fighter unit it wasn't possible to escape the long periods of TDY, especially when your in aircraft maintenance. My final position in the 91st FIS was in Technical Inspection. We Lived at 2 Yoeman Rd, Felixstowe. It was pretty tough on the wives in the unit since it was difficult to get a sufficient amount of Hot water to wash clothing, and bathe. We had a washing machine, (an old wringer type). With 2 small children in cloth diapers she had a tough time of it. Many evenings I had to finish the wash while she got supper ready so we could use the bath tub to bathe. We had only fireplaces to heat our quarters. An area around the fire place was reserved for drying diapers. (Space heaters are dangereous around small children). 9/24/03

  • Mike Critchley: Aurora, CO . RAF Woodbridge, 1971-1972, EOD. I was at RAF Woodbridge after Bien Hoa and Hahn AB Germany. Worked with Joe Fincher in the EOD quonset hut. I also lived in the WWII huts that were where the gas station was put later. We had coal stoves and the latrine was in another hut at the end of the block. My family and I visited RAF Woodbridge/Bentwaters in 1998 on vacation and it was sad to see RAF Bentwaters all boarded up. We talked to another Yank who was guarding the flight line at RAF Woodbridge and he said the RAF was using the base for training but not flying. There was a rumor that RAF Bentwaters might have a new life as a commercial passenger and cargo airport (never happened...Jim)but I have not heard any more about it. It was also sad to see the magnificent forest that was around the base had been "harvested". 3/17/01

  • Dan Curtis: Asheville, NC. RAF Bentwaters, 1951-52. Doesn't seem like there's too many of us oldsters left from that time frame. Married an Ipswich girl 46 years ago. Visited Ipswich in 1997 and rode by Bentwaters. It looks very deserted. Hopefully the private sector will build it up into a vital community. I was one of approx 100 who re-opened RAF Bentwaters in April 1951. Was attached to the Motor Vehicle Sq. Guy's I remember were Bob Byers, Ohio, a fella by the name of Malcom, Arkansas, Richie, NY, Art DeVose, Iowa, our best man, unfortunately died several years back. In my quonset(?) hut there was a fella by (I believe) the name of Williams an AP. Transferred from RAF Bentwaters to Upper Heyford, Oxfordshire around Feb 1952. Would like to hear from anyone stationed at RAF Bentwaters or Upper Heyford at the same time. 1/25/99
