Here are some of my chums who serviced the following Aircraft: London, Stranraer Lerwick, Sunderland Catalina, Fred Sadler, Tich Phillips,Jordan, Wilkie, Alec Attwood, Lots of memories. You have probably all done your last flight by now. I remember you all, we did our thing. Felixstowe is now a huge Container Port. Wonder if the barracks were saved? My wife and I live in Victoria Canada on the west coast. We are both WW2 veterans who with two young daughters emigrated from England in 1957. I decided after a short while, in 1957, to join the RCAF and ended my working days in the Canadian Coast Guard as an Electronic Technician. Where was RAF Station Felixstowe? Well if you know Felixstowe the base was at the extreme southwest end. There was an ACK-ACK battery close by and we were co-joined with the Royal Navy. It was visited on the odd occasion by the Luftwaffe and they always got a warm welcome. My inlaws lived in Ipswich. Our unit took back RAF Leiston from the American 8th Air Force when all the "Yanks" went home after doing a marvellous job. If you know where the container port is that was where RAF Felixstowe was. 5/23/01

Returned to civilian life and also returned to Texas where I joined the Southern Pacific Railroad and became a Locomotive Engineer. To be quiet honest, I don't miss the Air Force. It just wasn't fun anymore. And, to start off with 4 years at RAF Bentwaters/Woodbridge I guess we all can agree, it was downhill from there. Ah but the memories, Ipswich Running Buck, Bawdsey Beach, London West End, etc. Any old fellow airmen who may be out there, drop me an e-mail. 02/7/01 & 06/19/01

Many airmen found the love of their life at the "Y" .Several times over the years, I've been back to see the changes made to RAF Bentwaters and in 2001 a great reunion was held by the 81st Fighter Wing Assoc in Ipswich. This gave me a final look at the place I hold so dear in my heart, and have so many great memories of. 05/22/09

? Please contact me. Barbara Herdina: Memories: Standing guard posts in ORI security drills (always seem to catch the casa storage area down near Rendlesham woods, man that place was creepy). Those nights were ususally cold, dark, raining and/or foggy. Catching a cab to the train station and partying like crazy in London or after an exciting ferry ride at the Amsterdam School of ya ya and lets party till we puke. Making the run back to base to work Monday AM, hung over and sick. The parties at the NCO Club, and let's not forgt strippers nite. That delightful WRAF from RAF Bawdsey who was an Air Traffic Controller there. Maureen from Wales. The Irish chaplain Father O'Leary and the Wing Commander Col Weatherwax bringing around coffee to the guard posts. The barbecues behind personnel and the good chili at the rod and gun club. THE base football games against other bases 'Go Phantoms'. The beaches at Aldeburgh & the Music Festival & the White Lion. Good drinks and chow there. Fish and CHIPS, Shepherd Pie, Roly Poly and trifle. Still miss that chow. Especially Harp an Guiness while shooting snooker or playing darts, triple on down from 301 and double off anyone. Lots of good people Yank and bloke. Does anyone remember Capt David Pia and the haircut fiasco? Last but not least the Class IV liquor/tobacco store. By the way how is the Ipswich Soccer (Football) Club doing? 5/09/03

Great to see the other names up on this site: Mike Beeson and Tony Congi playing "drown in dew" at the main gate on mids, Mike Shaw, Brenda Layton/LeMaire, Ken Hagge, Dave Ward, Jerry Connor. You Bravo Flt guys were always inferior to us day shifters. Police 1 this is Pharoh. Thor this is Pharoh. How about those staged 30 in 30 responses for the IG. More like a 300 in 30. Bowling alley chicken sandwich and onion rings, cup of coffee and I'm off to post. What a great time. Never thought I'd miss so many of you hellions. Hope to hear from some of you. 5/29/05

  • Ron Hesson: Marion, OH. RAF Bentwaters, August 1963-August 1967. Today I discovered your wonderful site. When I started looking through all of the information you have I was absolutely astounded! Pictures and friend's names brought tears to my eyes! I always thought we were a forgotten group. I was in "B" Flight, 81st Air Police Sq, assigned to security duty first then base patrol. Eventually I worked as an investigator for Sgt Hamner, Air Police Investiigations. I loved RAF Bentwaters and England. I "grew up" there and it changed my entire life. I went on to become a police officer in Marion, OH and retired as a detective in 1995. We have since moved to Stuarts Draft, VA. I noticed a lot of guys I was with in the 60's are not on the 60's list. (The 60's list are the people I knew, worked with, that I recalled...Jim T). I hope to find them now. The folks that created this site will never know how delighted I am. I cannot find the words to express my true feelings. Thanks! 2/28/00

  • Jim Hollingsworth: In early 1958 I was TDY to RAF Bentwaters from Shepherds Grove for training. I was an A/3c in charge of the Roads & Grounds shop there. I was AFSC 55131 and had to have a trainer for my 5 level, so they sent me TDY to RAF Bentwaters. SSsgt Jack Brown was my trainer there, and also NCOIC of the shop. When the Grove closed, I was the last of two permanent party to leave. A2C William Maugel was my helper. We both went to RAF Woodbridge from the Grove, but I stayed a very short time. I worked as a building inspector there. Some of the people I worked with at RAF Bentwaters 1958-59 were. SSgt Jack Brown, NCOIC Roads & Grounds, Maj John J Leib, Civil Engineer, Eve Abbott, MSgt Clayton Wolfe, NCOIC AIO, ?? Pate, I think he was from NO LA, ?? Stutler. I was still in AIO in April 1959, when my oldest son was born. I realized that to advance in rank in that AFSC would be very difficult and I wanted to be nearer "them old airplanes" anyway so I cross trained & transferred to 81st FMS later that year. 06/10/04

We did many trips to Aviano AB, Decimomano in Sardenia, and a base in Zaragozsa Spain. Would like to here from anyone in that time frame. Proud to have served. 05/04/07

  • John Hanson Dawn Holloway: 31, Red Lion St, Alvechurch, Worcestershire, B48 7LG, tel: 0121.445.0340, UK. I'm a retired Police Officer from the West Midlands who has spent the last 19 years writing up accounts of strange phenomenon which have taken place in the skies of the UK embracing the period 1943-82(Two Volumes). During my research I have spent a lot of time visiting Rendlesham Forest, next to RAF Woodbridge/RAF Bentwaters Airbases, in Suffolk, a locality that I and my partner have fallen in love with. Thanks to our good friend Brenda Butler, from Leiston ,whose fascination for the events that took place in the Forest during the end of Dec 1980, have always enthralled us. Over the last 7 years we have witnessed all manner of strange things including 'orbs' seen with the naked eye, and many weird mists and ghostly images captured on digital camera, many are contained on, our website. During our research weve come across many reports from ex USAF Personnel relating to strange objects seen in the Forest( Separate from the Dec 80 incident) which have included reports of an intruder aprehended inside the airbase, (a local youth who sought to frighten the Security Police)sparking off ghostly claims! Another incident when a SP fired at what he believed was a intruder. Suffice to say this man was removed from duty later following an investigation. Who was this man? Does anyboy know? What about the other occasion when an Airman saw something manifesting inside the airbase which left a scorch mark on the 'hood of one of the vehicles? Fact or fiction? If anybody can help we can be contacted either by email or tel. 03/15/04

  • Leon Hopper, A/2C: Humble, TX. RAF Woodbridge, 1958-59, 79th TFS, Armament & Electronics. I am looking for anyone that was in the 79th TFS that might remember me. I had many truly great friends while at RAF Woodbridge and would like to hear from any of them. When I first arrived at RAF Woodbridge, I lived in one of the Quonset(Should be Nissen) huts on the hill behind the old air raid bunker. Later we had the new brick quarters built and were able to live a much better life. But then I must admit, most all of my days at there were special and I would love to be able to relive them. I was best friends with 'Tino' Corsino, George Montoya, TJ Steele, 'Zed' Zane, Charles Bartley, and Bobby Moses. So many more come to mind, but would take too much space to list. If you were stationed in there during that era and have any photos of the Airmen's Club on weekends, the Rainbow Tavern in Ipswich or perhaps photos of the 79th A&E Alert shack. I remember all of the old crashed WWII aircraft in the woods between RAF Bentwaters and RAF Woodbridge, but never thought to take any pictures. If you have any photos to share, please forward to me. I would also like to hear from anyone who might remember me or any of my friends. Thanks so much. 06/24/10

  • Terry Horth:Just logged on for the first time. Excellent pages. I read the entry by Ron Hesson regarding Burt Hamner. I was the Detective Sergeant (Suffolk Police) in charge of the Woodbridge Division during that period and worked with Burt Hamner and a Mike Gibbins, both Air Police and a couple of the finest cops going. We worked on many cases together, and had a few beers and a lot of laughs. I wont tell you of the various scrapes we had and our means of detecting crime but we got the results. When Burt left I managed to scrounge for him a old Police Cutlass from about 1840 and a set of prisoners leg irons with various fitting from childrens' size to adults. Mrs Hamner, who was skilfull in pottery made me a set of decanters which still have pride of place in my home. This enough of my chatter. I wish all of you the best of health and luck. Very happy memories from Terry. 7/27/00
  • Thaddeus Hosley: Miami, FL. RAF Bentwaters, 1978-80, 1986-89, 81st TFW. Hey, this is so great. I've scanned the guest book and just had a good time reading about everyone's experiences. I was first on RAF Woodbridge, AGE Shop, right next to the PJ's. I had the most incredible time. I don't remember many names from back in the day, but I know some of you will remember mine. I'm the black guy with freckles. I worked with Larry Parrot, Truck Turner, and Big Mack. After hours, I hug around at the gym and drove a red VW. When I came back, I worked in the Public Affairs Office in Wing HQ. I was the tour guide and often went to the A-10 gun shop and missile maintenance and flight line to show the A-10. After hours, I hung at the gym, took photos at the football games and traveled all over the place. I had a silver Mercedes and Earl Johnson and I hung out a lot. I left RAF Bentwaters and went to Camp New Amsterdam/Soesterberg, Holland and had the time of my life. I'm retired and living in Miami. I've been blessed in a big way. Send a note if you remember the good old days. 9/11/04

  • Sgt Bob (or John) Hunt: I wonder if you can help me in my quest to find Sgt Hunt, who was at RAF Bentwaters in the late 50's early 60's. I think he came from South Carolina with his wife Caroline and son Butch They lived off base at Snape. Us Brits 'blokes' always called him John but his wife called him Bob. He was a very keen motorcyclist and member of the Rendlesham and District Motorcycle Club and rode in many scrambles (dirt bike races) in the area. I am sure he worked somewhere in the Control Tower on base but no dept or service number. I lost contact with John after he returned to the States with his family, somthing I very much regret.
