Takes me back many years ago. The 2164th Com Sq and the Ops Center were in the same area. It was a WW11 style base, with Nisson huts and buildings everywhere. Came from Larson AFB by way of Camp Kilmer, NJ. While there, my buddy and I bought a 1934 Fiat touring car. If it weren't for those two DWEEBS, I just might still be in England. Last time I saw RAF Bentwaters was 1992 and I felt an empty pit at the bottom of my stomach. Have since met Gregory Jordan and Stephan Newman (both were at BW) in California at another closed base, March ARB (the R means Reserve). But I could not believe we would put up new base housing, a gym, a BURGER KING, an enlisted club, and Base Exchange just to close it. That will always trouble me. Thanks and keep up the work.(sorry Joe for the censor) 3/16/99

  • Tim Polodna:RAF Bentwaters, 1982-85, 81st EMS. Got married in Hasketon Sep 10, 1960. I lived on base and was dorm chief for two years, made senior airman because of this. Worked for Lt Col Minor in the orderly room. Am now 50. Best years of my life. So young and ignorant about life and the world. Three years in England and was sent to MI, Wurtsmith AFB. Hated it. Beautiful part of country but had not seen or experienced 'ice fishing' prior to this. Left active duty for five years and was in reserves at Richards-Gebaur AFB in KC MO. Was so tired of hearing the whine of A-10's, and wound up back in my home state at yet again another A-10 base! RAF Bentwaters/Woodbridge was a transit base, so I was so fortunate to see pretty much everything in the NATO flying arsenal. Best memory was of seeing an SR-71 do a touch and go on a weekend when I was doing work off duty to get ahead. Actually was at the start of the flightline waiting for the bus and saw it come in. The pilot turned his head, and in 'civis' I snapped too and saluted, got a snap salute back and he hit his burners and was gone. Incredible! It is so strange to look back and see everything I took for granted and was so fortunate to be allowed to be a part of. Left reserves, bad decision on my part, at the beginning of desert storm. Finally realized just what the A-10 was made for and how stupid I was for pining for the 15's and 16's. The 15's were loud. but I seem to remember the 111's being about the most ground shaking, next to an F-4. Had a long TDY just once to Germany, and wish now that I had stayed in and tried to get an assignment there. Beautiful country and people. Again, just to young and ignorant to realize what was in front of me. Finished at Richards-Gebaur on duty working an air show. I remember seeing a 117 do a fly-by. The first time I had seen one, of course by this time they had been used in Iraq, but still I had never actually seen one, let alone seen one fly. So strange an experience. Having grown up in the age of Star Wars movies, it was surreal. I welcome anyone's thoughts of the period, I believe 82-85 or so, including those I pissed off. I remember you, my mistakes, my achievements, my British family, and all. Again, the best part of my life. Alternate Email: 06/07/13

  • Melanie Powell (Susan Harvie): Ipswich, Suffolk, UK. Hi I've met Jim and Maureen last year when they came to Ipswich they run a great site. I'm a member of a self help group called TRACE, run by a lady called Pamela Winfield. We help and guide people who are looking for mostly GI dads. I myself have found my dads family in 1998. I also have a son from a GI who was stationed at RAF Bentwaters in the early 1980's. His name is Gary Fonville. He never knew anything about my son till 2 years ago when he was 15 but they met for the 1st time last year. Right now my son is in Floirda with him on another visit. They both have a wonderful relationship and my son is going over there to live in the next couple of years. All this has been a life changing experince for us all and I love to help people like me who are still searching. I used to live at 29 Blanche St in Ipswich. My mum had some great fiends, Pat & Jack Beard that lived in Cemerty Rd. I think Jack was at RAF Bentwaters. They had 2 kids Sharon & Gary. I'd love to catch up with them. If anybody knows of them please get in touch. I'm also trying to locate a man called Victor Rodriques La-Santa. His daughter wants to find him. He was stationed, we think, at RAF Bentwaters around 1957. If anyone has any info on him please get in touch. 4/16/01

  • Mickey Prosser MSgt (RET): North Carolina (living near Atlanta). RAF Bentwaters/RAF Woodbridge, what memories. I was 18 years old when I got my orders to the 81 TFW in 1977. It all seemed so different. Spent two awesome years making lots of friends and memories, worked on the F-4D's on the flightline and in the Phase docks. We used to ride the buses to London to go to the concerts and always stopped at MacDonalds, cause there just wasn't a Mickey D's everywhere back then like there is now. 3 channels on the TV, no VCR's just yet, but we always managed to get together and have a good time. Went back again in 1985, spent some cold nights working (92 AMU, 81st AGS)on the flightline down in the southwest development area. Better have some fresh batteries for your flashlite. Bundle up so the cold don't bite on you. Things got better and I got a job in the school house (MAT) teaching crew chiefs, the best job ever. Lots of TDY's, Zaragosa Spain, Leipheim & Sembach & Alhorn & Norvenich Germany. Two of our kids were born at Lakenheath while we were stationed at Bentwaters. Spent some fun times at the wood hobby shop with my good friend Jim Grieve, now at Lakenheath. Went to an awesome church, Faith Baptist and a great Pastor Greg Iehl. Man, where did the time get to. Plan to go back one day and visit. In the six years I spent there I got enough war stories to last me a life time. Miss the Golden Panda restaurant in Woodbridge town. Life is good and we are a blessed people. Always remember to keep the good memories and flush the bad ones. 1/23/00
