  • Janet Saul: I was reading the site and reliving the memories. I worked at the Running Buck, also RAF Bentwaters clubs, 1967-73. I have a hard time putting faces with names but have no trouble remembering the fun we had. I'm the one who worked mostly in Annies Parlour, long blonde hair and glasses. Diane was across the hall, Jean upstairs, Lionel and Loveday down the hall and Mrs Angel next door to name a few. I worked on base with Carol Mergil, Pat Brown, Eddie, Jean and Gill (two sisters) to name a few more. Was just back for a visit, things have changed. Saw Pat and she would like to get in touch with Tom Orlando 1966-67, also Fred Deskin. E-mail me for more info. Have been living in the U P of Michigan since 1979, close to K I Sawyer AFB. K I Sawyer closed a few years ago so now its like living in Rendlesham forest without the people, definitely not the single life. Sick of snow but have 4 grandkids here. Are we getting old or not, NOT,cos those good times have kept us young. Would love to hear from old friends and in the meantime I will try to learn how to use this computer. 4/23/02

  • Al Schoessow: Sarosota, FL. RAF Bentwaters, Jul 1959-Jul 1962,, 81ST A&E CAMRON COMM/NAV. Still miss the times I had, and friends I made. I know James Reed on these pages. We sometimes email each other. I do have some pictures and would like to get them on the website. I will have to figure it out. 3/1/99 . I couldn't wait to get out of there, but I wish I could have gone back in 1968 when my activated reserve outfit had some people sent to England. I had a ball over there. I know John Reed who also posted on this web site. Wish I could find other buddies that I served with during that time. Yes we did live in those Nissen Huts, but after about a year or so they built the new barracks that I believe stand today. The map I got of the site shows the barracks and chow hall and that is all I can remember about the area. Had a buddy in the AP's but don't know his name. He used to call me Azoli-Azoli. Picked me up one night after an incident on the mail train from London. I wasn't arrested but was taken in for questioning in the back of a 2x2. Man it was cold back there in that truck. I did not get any pictures, that I know of, but will look and see if I did. I remember the first few F100 that went thru to NATO. I was the crew chief of F-86 tail #209 piloted by Major Jack B Owens. I was assigned to Flight C and have memories of many friends in the squadron. I have made contact with Jimmie E Cone, George W Hundley, Kenneth Meyer and sent e-mail to a couple others along the years. When my wife arrived in country, we initially lived in Thetford where I used to ride a motor powered bicycle to and from Shepherds Grove until our car arrived. The people of Thetford seemed to go out of their way to make us "Yanks" feel welcome and we made several friends while living there. We next moved to "The Rookery", a rather large estate house just outside Bury St Edmunds and finally in a "Caravan" on a hardstand just outside the back gate nearest Stanton. We visited many of the English villages and especially enjoyed the coronation of Queen Elizabeth. Many sites come to mind that will never be forgotten, especially the beautiful countryside and old and beautiful Churches. I enjoyed our "trips" to Germany, Italy and Libya for gunnery practice. I resigned from the Air Force in 1953 returning to the states and reenlisted in 1955, retired in 1969. Shepherds Grove and the immediate area brings back a lot of good memories. Visited your site several times and am very impressed with a) your computer skills b) your longtime interest (passion?) for the region and c) your long, long list of friends, acquaintances, and well-wishers. Here's my story: My family moved to RAF Bentwaters in July 1976. I was 9 years old. Attended grades 5-6 at Woodbridge Elementary, 7th grade at Woodbridge Jr/Sr High. My father, retired March 1999, spending 13 years at Randolph AFB. Between RAF Bentwaters and Randolph, were assigned to Edwards, Fairchild, and Tinker. Am now in the USAF, having served 9 years enlisted, now as an officer. Were lucky enough to have some of the troops from 1976-79 attend his retierment. I work with two of them at HQ AETC! One was an airman at the clinic back then, she is now a Reserves SMSgt working with me daily as a GS. The other a junior bioenviron. engineering officer, Chief of Bioenv Engineering at HQ, named Larry Pazyra Another attendee was someone who many of your web-site readers may remember, the base pediatrician at RAF Bentwaters, Jim Smalley, recently retired as Colonel (to CA), was the Chief Pediatric consultant for the USAF. • Dick Shively: RAF Bentwaters, 1960-1963, 81st Air Police Sq. I really enjoyed reading your web site. Shortly after arriving at RAF Bentwaters, I was asked if I wanted to go to the British K-9 school. I already had four years of K-9 experience from the states, so of course I went. It wasn't too long after returning from the school that several of us were asked if we would like to live at the kennels. About eight of us volunteered. There was a small building on the grounds with a canvas top and a pot belly stove inside for warmth. We used the building kitchen to cook our meals and also prepared the food for the dogs at the same time. I guess sometimes we ate theirs and sometimes they ate ours. The kennel area was down over a little hill from the alert aircraft area. In 1963 I married Anita, who lived outside of Ipswich and after we were married, we moved into a little house in Kesgrave. In October 1963 we returned to the states. We will celebrate our 38th wedding anniversary in May of this year. I am attaching a copy of the K-9 patch I wore on my fatigues while in the Dog Section. Thought some of the others might remember the patch too. King, with a big smile, and I Greeting visitors to the base. Would like to hear from anyone who wants to contact me. 2/18/01

  • James F Short Jr: Germantown, TN. RAF Bentwaters, Aug 1955-Jul 1958. Father was Captain Short 81st FMS. I found this site a few days ago. I have already exchanged e-mails with a couple of fellows who knew my Dad. He had a fatal heart attack in 1970 at the age of 48. My mother is living in Columbus, Mississippi and is listed as F R Short. We always had fond memories of RAF Bentwaters and I took my Mother and Sister back for a visit in 1984. I started my love of airplanes when I use to go to the flight line and maintenance hanger with my dad and our boxer dog. I fly for Fedex now. I am interested in any information and photograghs of aircraft my Dad had painted in Wing colors. Serial numbers for the C-47's and T-33's (also pilot and crew chief's name on canopy's)and photograghs that will help in building models of these aircraft would be of great help. I have decals for the three squadrons of f-84's and the Beaver l-20. Thanks if you can share information. 10/31/02

  • Jonathan C Smith: Trawling the 'net, really to check out my PC post-start-2000(!) and stumbled on the RAF Bentwaters/Woodbridge site. Brilliant! I used to live in Kesgrave, near Ipswich, Suffolk, UK. My Mother worked at RAF Bentwaters (Base Supply office). Anyone remember 'Chester' and 'Sgt. Berg(sp), 1961-63. Father also worked at RAF Bentwaters/Woodbridge, Quantity Surveyor with the British MoD and helped maintain the base operational facilities-runways, etc. He was once nearly arrested by armed MP's because he was checking on construction work near a bomb store. It was the one day he wasn't carrying all his passes. The MP's sat him down, made enquiries and were told "you can't miss him-he's always smoking his pipe". As it happened, Dad was dying for a smoke, but thought if he put his hand into his pocket to get his pipe, one or more of the M16's pointed at him might just go off! He laughed (a long time) afterwards but at the time what he was saying about Americans would have done nothing for US/UK relations, little for NATO, and could have triggered WW3, but that was years ago. Great to see this site. I visited the bases several times and loved looking 'close-up' at the F101, F4, A10 and other interesting visitors. 1/1/00

  • Keith Snyder: Dallas, Texas. My father, Charles Snyder, RAF Bentwaters, flew Voodoos with the 92nd TFS from 1960-63. 81TFW Voodoo operations are a well kept secret in military aviation history books. The B and RF models are the ones generally addressed. The single seat bombers have been overlooked for the most part. I have been gathering photos and information for several years now, in the hopes of capturing those years. What the 81st did with those aircraft was incredible, and should be recognized in print. If anyone reading this has photos of the Voodoos, RAF Bentwaters/Woodbridge flightline or aircraft facilities, Wheelus detachments, etc., please consider sharing them with me for this work. I am also gathering personal exepriences with the aircraft, from pilots, maintainers, and others who worked with or flew the aircraft. Any help would be appreciated. 5/15/00 & 05/23/08

This man is my fiancee's father. She was born in Sept 1970. Her father Joseph was about 20 years old at the time. It seems that he returned to the US at about that same period. He was an Air Policeman until 1970 and probably all of 1969 as well. He is of Italian origin, quiet, short and with very dark hair (at the time). He used to drive a red sports car that he apparently brought with him from the states. Do you know him or know someone that does? 5/28/00 & 7/24/00

  • Ernest J Stallcop: Toledo, WA. RAF Bentwaters, Jul 1975Jul 1977, 81st MMS. I remember all the time I spent visiting different villages around the area. I remember the nights I spent at the NCO club, especially the one waitress, an older lady by the name of Jean, she lived in Ipswich as I recall. The best fish & chips was from the truck that used to stop outside the main gate. The last full weekend I was there, some of my English friends had contacted lots of the folks I had visited over the 2 years that I was there, and they gathered at the NCO club. It was a great night, last thing I truly remember other than dancing with all the pretty girls was looking at my watch, and it read 8pm. The rest of the evening is just a blur. Thanks for continuing the work that has been started. It brings back lots of fond memories. 04/9/10

I have alot of good and bad memories from those years I spent at (Bendover, lol) what a few of us called it in the bad times. We all know that the good always outweighs the bad. I was in Conv Maint 1981-82 then moved to AFK until I left in 1984. I returned in 1987 where I was assigned to Trailer Maint 1987-90. Reassigned to Conv Maint at RAF Woodbridge again until I left in 1991. When I heard about the closing it was a sad time all that history. e-mail me if you remember me. 9/09/03
  • Allan Stearns: Ft Walton Beach, FL. RAF Bentwaters, May 1975-May 1978, Wing Safety Office. Just discovered the site. My 3 years in the 81st were the best in 26 plus yrs in the AF. Was a Capt then and lived in Woodbridge Town. Both sons born at RAF Lakenheath during this tour. Loved the place and the opportunities to sightsee were great. BG Jerry Larson, and Rudy Wacker were commanders during my years. F-4D's were giving way to the Warthogs when I left. What a shame to see all the concrete shelters etc. going to waste. Loved the 4 lane bowling alley at RAF Woodbridge. I need to drive up to Suffolk again next time over. My family came to the US in 1628 from Suffolk. 4/14/01 I was the wing explosives safety officer. Loved the assignment. Great folks. I need to return for an up to date look at the old facilities, if they exist. I was in the command post a lot, so the museum is probably as I remember it. I had the highest security clearances due to the nature of my job and the items we had "hidden" on the base. Retired today as LtCol. 07/23/11

  • Allen Sutherland: California. RAF Bentwaters, Oct 1960-Jul 1964. 81st Supply Sq. My Wife's name is Barbara. We lived at 48 Sidegate Lane in Ipswich. Barbara and I just returned July the 13th from a 5 week visit to family in London and Coventry and friends in Birmingham where Barbara grew up. She was born in Ruskin Collage in Oxford and we met in London at the Hammersmith Palladium and were married Nov 30,1963 at Caxton Hall, Westminster, London. She was born March 1941 after her mother was evacuated from London during the blitz. I was born June 1938 in Mt. Shasta, CA and enlisted in Oakland, CA, April 1960. What a surprise, a pleasant one, to come across your great web site. It brought back many memories of things I had not thought about for ages. Those years I spent in England were very good to me. I too went to Lackland and then to advanced training in Amarillo . I attended Supply Inventory Management School. I Initially was assigned the 81st Air Base Sq, RAF Bentwaters and arrived there 1 Oct 1960. Was put in the second hut over from the orderly hut, but after two weeks they reassigned me and two others to the 81st Supply Sq, back up the street. I was billeted in those other ugly cold huts until 1962 when they moved us into the brick barracks. We watched them build the new mess hall right across from out hut. Nearly everything was in Nissan Huts of one size or another. The Base Supply offices were in the Tech area, we called it the flight line area, in a group of warehouses down the end where the salvage yard was from, transportation, Fire dept and Data Control. The mail room was just up the street from the gate, then again I might have it all wrong, its been so long ago. I guess everything changed over the years from what I read on your web site. I guess we are pretty old timers aren't we. Well I could go on an on but you remember all of this stuff so I will stop. I will say that one of the biggest surprises that I had when I was in the AF was when I left there and reported to Travis AFB, CA. I was informed that they had received a message from RAF Bentwaters promoting my to Sergeant E5. I sure needed the money as you well know. Our daughter Tracy was born 1 Nov 1964 at Travis AFB Hospital . After I got out I worked as a welder for 30 years for the Navy so our daughter was born when I worked for the AF and our son was born while I worked for the Navy. I'm attaching a couple of photos, that's me on the right with glasses, the other fellow Owen Chastine, Base Supply, also married an English girl named Maureen and they were still there when we left. I must say I found out things I did not know from your great site. Good info, good maps, did not see anyone I knew personly. 9/03/05
